Gary,
This is an issue long ago recognized as being basically unsolvable. If my memory is at all correct, these are some points about the issue:
-the belt is unique
-the manufacturer trashed the mold for it some decades ago
-there were attempts to make new ones at one point in the past
-there have been developed replacement methods that involve other kinds of belts or chain belts and appropriate replacement pulleys/wheels
-Small Parts, Inc., in Florida that was likely supplier of the parts is long out if business, alas.
As I remember it, I did a complete overhaul on one SX-88 about 20 years ago. The belt on it was intact and survived the process. It may have been a replacement belt installed before I worked on the radio.
My work on that radio involved complete tear down, lubrication and alignment of both gear trains in addition to electronic overhaul. The result was zero backlash and like-new performance of the whole radio. It was s joy to operate.
I may have more detailed information on that situation on my real computer. I will look in a day or so when it is put online again(cellphone here now). Is there a mailing list archive that goes back that far?
Roy sends.
