Thanks Greg I appreciate the information. I can see how it was made, there were openings for the trimmer capacitors and the coils in that area. With some doing, I can duplicate something should the need arise.
I am fortunate with this set, my measurements say that the majority of the resistors are in tolerance. I found that almost amazing given its age. I lack three X1Y2 capacitors and have replaced the multi-section capacitor with a new one. I hope to have those ceramic caps this afternoon then I am going to try to power it.
Do you have other suggestions before I do? The paper caps were all replaced some years back and the ones I have removed and tested check good. Since the audio transformer is missing, I plan to use my audio wattmeter and plug it into the phone jack for testing. If it works then I will consider having the audio transformer rewound. I wonder if you know if that transformer was a weak link? I noticed this one has a 1/2 amp fuse in the HV center tap, probably put there after the transformer went. All the sites that cover restoration have had the transformer replaced.

Jim,
Yes, there is supposed to be a zinc plated cover over that area. I will get a picture for you a little later this evening.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] Question abt SX 42
I have been working on one of these which is pretty much complete, thank
goodness, and my resistance measurements say it should work. Like a lot of
them the audio transformer is bad and finding one that will work is a
challenge. I think I have that problem solved, but I have a question for
anyone who knows.
Along the side of the chassis where the bandswitch is located there is an
open space for access to adjustments and test points for the front end. It
appears there was a cover over that section. I wonder if anyone can verify
the existence of such a cover.
All the restoration sites I have viewed do not show or mention a cover so
maybe it is something that was removed and laid aside to be forgotten.
Other than the stray capacitance, I cannot see any particular reason for it
to be there so maybe people discarded them. None of the documentation I
have seen mentions it. I have searched my imagination but am empty and do
not have the factory service information. Can anyone comment?
