[Hallicrafters] SR-500 VFO

Hi All -

Picked up a SR-500 in very rough shape, and am starting to go through
it. A previous owner mangled the VFO -- there was a terminal strip cold
soldered to the chassis, and no apparent connection to the variable
capacitor. It was a real mess.

After removing all of the "mods", I have this:

Unfortunately, it appears that I can't get the VFO tuned to it's
requisite frequency now. Following the WD0GOF guidelines, I should see
9 MHz when set to 3.8 MHz -- this rig reports back approximately 7.8 MHz.

Can anyone tell me if the VFO has been messed up beyond repair, or any
suggestions as to how to get it set right? The last owner really abused
this radio, and it's taken me a while to get it back, but I think it
will start to go if I can get the VFO where it's supposed to be.

Any thoughts or tech advice is appreciated. Please reply to list.

Jeff
