[Hallicrafters] HT-32a Zero Beating

How do you zero beat the HT-32a TX with the receiver?  I tried the Calibrate mode which didnt do nothing for me.  The manual is very vague on this subject.  I am using a SX-101a as a receiver, and in doing so, I utilize the VOX relay in the TX to switch Pin 7 on the accessory plug on the RX from Gnd to Open, on PTT.  When the relay (pin 7) goes Open, it disables the receiver audio, thereby unable to hear any zero beat.  Is there a SECRET method??  Any help would be appreciated.
