[Hallicrafters] Communications Receivers - why speakers separate?

Based on my experience, it had nothing to do with headphones.
An external speaker such as an R-46 or an R-42 simply was too large for
the enclosures.
I picked up an HT-37/SX-101A that had a 12" or larger National external
speaker.
