[Hallicrafters] Communications Receivers - why speakers separate?

Most better receivers did not have a built in speaker. You could buy the
matching speaker but that is not necessary. I bought a HQ-110 in 1957 but
as someone in school the matching speaker was beyond my budget. We made
trips to New Orleans several times a year and on one visit I went to
Southern Electronics on Tulane Avenue. There was a nice speaker attached to
a NC-183D with simulated wood and a 8" quam speaker mounted inside. They
had several in stock and for $8 I walked out with a nice speaker that worked
well with my HQ-110.

I still have the speaker and have used it with the SX-100, RME 6900, and
HQ-170 among others. If I get the matching speaker with the receiver as I
did with a restored HQ-129X I use that otherwise I I use the old $8 speaker
from 1957.
