Another dividing line in the speaker/no-speaker decision was the end user.

Typically, if a radio was intended for the casual SWL, it would have a 
speaker built-in.  If it was intended for Ham Radio use it did not.

That's why the lower end radios had speakers and the pricier models didn't.
