Thanks Ron and Jim for the information. I have reversed the plug without effect so went looking and noticed that on/off wire routing but have not changed it. I guessed then that at least part of the problem was most likely there.
A few years back a local owned computer store shut is doors and I picked up AC cords and still have quite a number of them around. In this case I don’t believe putting a grounded cord on the set will cure much of the problem. I stumbled upon an almost unmolested Globe Champion 300A and a similar NC 183D recently and put those cords on them as a matter of practice. It just makes good sense.
I may reroute the AC wire to the switch to see if I can isolate it enough to cure the problem or I have some of the little coax and may put that in place of the wire but at at the moment am involved in painting the cabinet of the 183D and I have a while till the fests I attend. Priorities you know.

Jim, just trying to spread the word about SGE. When it first came out, Home Depot carried it. When it was discontinued, I bought all they had.
Jim (K9AXN) mentioned the 2 wire cord. Try reversing the plug. I've had the same problem and this prompted me to change EVERY piece of test equipment / radio that comes through here, to 3 wire, grounded.
Great source is eBay. I buy computer / printer cords by the dozen there, for cheap....
have fun, guys!

No mine is the two pin AC plug. I did not bother to change it and it is
ungrounded except through the coax. The hum is really only noticeable when the
volume is turned all the way down in the Normal mode. With any audio at all it
I don’t hear it, and In the voice mode it is gone. I have thought about
working to get it out but decided against it. The SX 117 I had did not have the
same problem and this kind of caught me off guard.
As I mentioned I plan to sell it this Spring so if the new owner wants to change
or fix the problem it will be up to him.
Thanks for the information about cleaning the chassis Ron. I have not used that
method so will consider it before I sell it. In a way I kind of think I should
keep it but space is a premium and I don’t want to store it in the uncontrolled
environment of my garage.
Best,
Jim

Jim:
Do you have a 3 pin plug on it? Some radios with 2 pin plugs will have less hum
than those with the 3 pin grounding plug. This aught to generate some
conversation!
Kindest regards Jim K9AXN
