You do NOT need a $3000 tester to test tubes. I have a model 600A which I got for free, among several other tube testers. They all work fine and are of good quality. The most I paid for them was $10.

Thank you all for the advice. (hello Jim, your sword rests above Sara and my
bed!)
eBay has a Hickok 539C offered at near $3000! It must be something awesome.
My late uncle (N6SE) told me about this tester and said it was the one to
have. I'd use it to test my Halli SX-16 and 28 tubes and that is it. My main
intent is to get it so when I find someone who needs it, I will have one. I
am not interested in making money on it, just "saving it."
I will let you know the outcome.
Thank You,
Larry Young

Hi all,
Im wondering what everyone is using to monitor their bugs when sending
cw with old radios. Im not looking for a "keyer" to use with paddles. Im
looking to see what I can use to monitor my cw using my vintage keys
since my old Hallicraters HT-30 nd HT-32 do not have a sidetone monitor.
Thanks-Bob-W0YBS

There are various sorts of monitors you can use. For
instance the old Bud code practice oscillator can be hooked
up to be triggered by strong RF. I think many of the old
ARRL handbooks had articles for building similar dual
purpose oscillators.
However, I used to monitor off my receiver. There was
enough leakage through the antenna relay to hear it at about
the same level as the received signal. My rig at the time
was a modified BC-779, and a modified BC-375E driven by a
home brew exciter. I worked a lot of CW and this arrangement
worked well. I just left the REC-Send switch on the receiver
on REC so that it was not muted by the muting relay. I am
now using a set of Drake 4B line twins. The transmitter has
a side tone oscillator but I still prefer to unmute the
receiver and listen on that. The side tone has an advantage
where you want to send and receive on fairly widely
different frequencies but that is unusual for amateur
practice.

I just monitor my signal on the receiver I'm using. If for some reason I am not on the same freq as the other guy the local key clicks are enough for me.No matter if I'm using a bug straight key or keyer.
You can also turn on a spare RX. With no antenna it ir the RX you are using for tge QSO should monitor quite nicely.

And if that doesn't work, listen to the hum from the transformer in the

Those audiophiles have driven up the prices of testors to redicuolous
prices, but that is the most I have ever heard of one being listed for.
It would be cheaper to just buy a bunch of NOS tubes and swap them when you
need one until you find a keeper and you would still end up ahead, and with
a nice supply of tubes to boot.
