There are various sorts of monitors you can use. For
instance the old Bud code practice oscillator can be hooked
up to be triggered by strong RF. I think many of the old
ARRL handbooks had articles for building similar dual
purpose oscillators.
However, I used to monitor off my receiver. There was
enough leakage through the antenna relay to hear it at about
the same level as the received signal. My rig at the time
was a modified BC-779, and a modified BC-375E driven by a
home brew exciter. I worked a lot of CW and this arrangement
worked well. I just left the REC-Send switch on the receiver
on REC so that it was not muted by the muting relay. I am
now using a set of Drake 4B line twins. The transmitter has
a side tone oscillator but I still prefer to unmute the
receiver and listen on that. The side tone has an advantage
where you want to send and receive on fairly widely
different frequencies but that is unusual for amateur
practice.
