David, in order to get the best (warm) sound from the 6C4's, even if they 
are used in an RF circuit,  you MUST paint the very tip of the glass with a 
green felt tip marker.   This encourages only the acceptable "green" 
electrons to make the journey from cathode to plate.

When inserting the tube, do NOT just push down using your thumb and 
fore-finger !  Gently set the tube, properly positioned in the socket, and 
push it down with a small piece of bamboo such that the glass tip goes up in 
the hollow part of the bamboo.  Obviously, the outer diameter of the bamboo 
must be smaller than the diameter of the tube.   Squeezing pressure on the 
glass envelope will allow weak spots which will admit an undue amount of 
cosmic rays (similar to the 9th ray of Barsoom) to enter and disrupt the 
flow of those aforementioned green electrons.

There are said to be some mystic chants (different for dual triodes or beam 
power tubes)  you must perform before actually applying power to the 
circuit, but I feel that is taking things a bit too far and not really 
necessary.
