[Hallicrafters] How To Unsolder Can Capacitors (or anythingelse?)

+1 on the large soldering iron.
Recently I bought a new Weller 120W iron similar to the old 'Beauty' type
irons.
This is not the usual Weller iron with pistol grip.
The large 5/8" tip instantly melts the chassis connections.
I'm finding it very handy while servicing a Johnson 500.

Hi Dave:
Buy a sheet of Teflon. You can get it in any thickness you like. I always
slide a small sheet into a congested area as a shield when soldering or
de-soldering --- saves all the ugly melted wiring and don't have to move
everything away.

To remove the chassis soldered cans, as David states, the old 200 watt 3
pound iron does it in an instant without heating the whole chassis.

BTW, I agree with the evaluation of the Hakko 808 de-soldering gun. After
using it can't live without it.

Kindest regards Jim K9AXN

I finally got the can loose. I unsoldered a whole bunch of wires to move
them out of the way and then used my 220W electric iron that uses a great
big chunk of copper for a tip. That melted the solder in a hurry.

I sure wish the EPA hadn't screwed things up by eliminating asbestos.
Some of that asbestos paper for a heat shield would have made things easier.
