Not all of their receivers are that hard to work on but
I think probably the design was compromised toward being
cheap to make. Hallicrafters always concentrated on keeping
the price low while delivering good performance. In other
words, high value for money. As a result I think they _did_
wind up with designs that were cheaper to replace than to
repair. The life was probably calculated to be on the order
of ten years or so. We have a similar result for different
reasons with current consumer electronic produces: they are
cheaper to replace than to repair and my not be repairable.
Also remember that when there was an early life failure
in these older radios they could be returned to the factory
if necessary for repair.
Anyone who ever built a Heathkit has some idea of how
equipment is built in layers. Heathkit warned that the
instructions were to be followed _exactly_. If you did that
you were OK, if you tried to anticipate you would get into
trouble. The factory built equipment based on something
like the heathkit instructions. The result is that some
repairs are like archeology where you have to remove layers
to get at something.
