[Hallicrafters] Good Ebay experience

I agree wholeheartedly Dave, picking up the heavy expensive and
potentially risky stuff is the way to go. I had a good one last month too. A few
months ago an estate liquidator in Cairo, Georgia first listed SX-88 #161
showing a badly warped bezel with a Buy-It-Now for $8500 but there were no
takers. It was then re-listed several times with a lower price each time and the
most recent re-list was down to $3000 or best offer. I have a bezel so I
sent an offer of $2500 stating I would pick the receiver up (no shipping)
and it was accepted. I drove down to get it the week of July 4th and was
surprised to learn it was from the estate of the original  owner Winfred Chason;
W4NQZ,who was also a former engineer of an AM station Albany, GA. Other
than having a couple of caps replaced in its past the receiver is completely
original including the factory paint. While I was there paying for the
receiver the seller asked if I would also be interested in W4NQZ's 32V-3 for
$200, which included the original manual in an envelope. Then he brought out
the R-46 for the receiver and a collection of books which had belonged to
Winfred and gave me a hand getting everything in the car. The thrill of the
chase and the trip home afterwards with the goods in the car with you is
still an exciting part of it for me.

For sure that there are knuckleheads on both sides.
Most of the time I just drive to wherever the item is located and pick it
up.
Usually the gas is just a little more than the shipping and there is very
little chance that the unit is damaged when I get it.
The latest example is when I drove from Tulsa to San Mateo to pick up a
very
nice and complete Johnson 500.
It was worth the time and hassle to go get it.
Another time was when I went to Sioux City to pick up a Henry 3K Classic
MKll.
The flip side of this is that these 2 units could not be easily shipped
anyway so if I wanted them I had to pick them up.
Not a problem.....

This isn't just an eBay issue. Buyers are generally unwilling to cover the
cost of proper packing. I had a fellow tell me it was just a "cost of doing
business". But I'm not a business, sooo ....

Why would someone pay nearly $2000 for a radio and then argue for days
about $75 to have it packed by a professional electronics shipper (and I
don't put UPS in that category!)? It makes no sense. The last time that
happened I finally refused to sell the item to the guy.

On the other hand, there are many sellers who insist on you paying a hefty
"packing fee", and the 60 lb item arrives in a ratty, second hand, single
ply cardboard box with nothing but a few peanuts, and you get the latest in
trapezoidal cabinets. There's always at least one chassis component
usually
an unsecured tube or a heavy transformer that breaks loose and presents an
empirical lesson in the physics of projectiles in an enclosed space. :/
