John,
Below are three messages. The first is from Richard Knoppow.
The second is from Chuck Dachis, Hallicrafters collector, who wrote several
books on them. He is responding to my question on serial numbers for the
S-40B. If you read my message first which appears below that, Dachis'
message may make more sense.
Long story short, I was not successful in finding out very much about my
serial number.
According to Richard Knoppow, his S-40A has permanent SN metal tag.

"I have only an S-40A to look at so this may not be true of your receiver.
Mine has a metal
label on the back with a serial number stamped into it. The S-40B has an
improved circuit but overall looks a bit cheaper so it may not have had a
metal label. I think mine also has a run number stamped on the chassis but
its on a shelf where I can't conveniently look inside."

Hello Chris,
Most of the serial numbers for Hallicrafters equipment from the 1950s
forward were on cardboard tags glued to the rear apron of the chassis, and
it other places you have found. In the early days and on some larger higher
end items these tags were metal with engraved numbers. The "run number" is
not a serial number but rather like the edition number of a book. The
company may have done a thousand units of run 1, twelve hundred of run 2
etc, the higher the run number would indicate a later production. There were
usually minor changes between the run numbers. hope this helps you.

help
(I have heavily edited my message to Chuck for brevity)
Hello Chuck,
I hope you can help me with this (Serial number) question.
I got my hands on a S-40B in the original Hallicrafters shipping box. On
the box exterior, there were a number of labels including a couple of small
Hallicrafters labels: one is a serial number label (D-519549), ......
..... On the upper right rear corner of the (S-40B) cabinet, there is a
paperboard "Hallicrafters" tag affixed to the cabinet with one of the hex
screws that retain the cover hinge. This tag has been damaged due to
handling but the serial number printed on it is legible with magnification
and matches the one on the shipping box (519549). ......
I'm curious whether or not Hallicrafters engraved a serial number somewhere
on the chassis since I can't find one. There is a stenciled (or stamped)
number in red ink on the surface of the chassis at the left rear near the
edge. The digits at the end do not match the ending numbers of the SN on
the tag and on the box. "Run 3" is a suffix to the series of digits.
I would greatly appreciate any enlightenment you could provide on this
serial number question. Thanks, Chris W7JPG

Hope this adds to the info you will receive.
