Been piddlin lately and recapped two Hallicrafters S40A receivers and one S40B receiver. One S40A receiving well through 15 mhz and doing a fair job on Citizens band. Of course there are always signals there and gain is down above 18 mhz or so. The other S40A seems to have a audio output problem. When that is fixed, I think that will be the best of the two S40As.
The S40 B is receiving about the same as the working S40A.
I am curious if there is some record of serial number blocks as there is for other Hallicrafters receivers such as my SX 28A?
The serial numbers are as follow: S40A (1) has a serial number of HA-7106 and the other (2) S40A has a serial number of HA-95932. Anyone have a clue as to their manufacture dates?
The serial number of the S40B is 70E937. It has an ink stamp of Q35 which I GUESS was the quality control stamp of the person who checked it out at the factory. Same question about the manufacture date of the S40B.
I have Hallicrafters from SX 25, SX28A, 38C, ,S85, SX99, SX 100A MK, SX101, basket case SX 115. The SX 28A refurb will come with cool weather and the SX115 will hopefully follow.
Too many round tuits, but only the SX 25, SX 28A, S76 SX 101 and SX 115 need recapping and refurb.
I know the general period of the popularity of the S40A and S40B, because I bought a used S40A from "Uncle Dave" at Fort Orange Radio in 1957 and he shipped it via Railway Express from New Jersey to me in Louisiana. If you have any input regarding the S40As dates of manufacture and
the S40B, it will help me with my historical accumulation and designations. LORD knows everything around here is OLD including the "Piddlin Geezer". 73, John, K5PGW
the S40 B, your input will be appreciated. Thanks and 73, John, K5PGW
