[Hallicrafters] SK notes

Hello TC,

How does one get their equipment appraised so family understands its value?
And for insurance purposes too.

For example: I have my dad's 1937 Hallicrafters SX-16 restored to mint
condition. The SX-16 already had a great start having been well cared for.
What is it worth? The amount of the restoration? Then about two years ago I
bought an SX-28 (grey front paneled unit) from a fellow halli-site guy who
had recapped and tuned it. Later on I had to restring the SX-28 :) . This
1940's radio is a phenomenal performer, complete and original... which is
why I spent the money for it + having to drive to East LA to get it. But
what is it worth? What I paid for it + my personal value?

Chuck Dachis' wonderful book: "Radios by hallicrafters" has values, but they
are dated since its 1999 printing. I'd hope the values have increased since
1999, though I sometimes wonder if 'old stuff ' will hold value to the
coming generations. It seems Apple and others have nixed certain types of
old stuff holding or growing in value with electronics coming with newer and
"better" faster than ever. Despite demonstrations to my son and his many
friends I do not find many young people interested in such a large & HEAVY
radio. It is a similar case with vinyl records "the sound is awesome, but
they are not convenient." I think my son would keep the SX-16 because he'd
be third generation owner and probably the SX-28 "because it looks cool",
but using and truly valuing it?... Maybe.

Seems I had heard Chuck Dachi is producing a new book? Is he still
around/kicking?

I once wrote, in my column for the Kansas Amateur Radio Newletter, about
just such a thing - also mentioning, that it's IMPORTANT to make your
friends, wife, sig-other, or parents AWARE of WHAT you have in that little
room, and roughly what it's worth. Also, whom to contact to help them with
disposal, so it does'nt end up in a garage sale or worse - a dumpster.

A "pocket history" of your ham-self is important too. It' a hobby that's
put many of us on a life's career-path, and as it was SO important, it
should NOT be forgotten. Yeah, and if you're in that 10th. call area, be
sure they understand WHY that big O in your callsign has a slash through it!

(wish the website accepted the ASCII zero)

73 (as I listen to my SX-62A with a bluegrass show coming out of the R-42)
