While at National and then later I did service work for Herb on the side,
especially on the R-390's and other Collins surplus such as the R-388 and
R-388A/51J4.
I was the one who set up the deal on the basement water damaged NCX-5's and
accessories. I still have a NIB NCX-A and VX-501 from that burst pipe
episode. National had quite a few unsold NCX-5's once the competition tore
them up and they had sat there for years. One of the hats I wore for a short
time was "Acting" Sales Manager while still the Service Manager and an Engr
Aide. I later went to Engr full time until the layoffs started and
volunteered as I was living in NH then and had a close job already lined up.
Fun times
Then I moved to Chicago for Sanders Associates and Herb passed away just
before I moved back in 1973. Many didnt like him mainly because he could
spot a phoney right away and let it show. I watched him chase people out of
the showroom.
One time a well known ham had sticky fingers and Herb literally tossed him
out but didnt call the cops. He and I took turns sleeping in his office that
night on a hunch while one was awake. That same dirtbag returned around 1AM
and tried to break in thru the basement. I waited upstairs while Herb went
out the front, around the back and proceeded to beat the s**t out of the
creep. Turns out he had pilfered other items during visits with his pals to
act as decoys.
The creep went to the cops later in the morning claiming he had been
assaulted. Herb explained he had been awakened by a noise, put on a light
and heard what sounded like something falling and then running away. He said
it sounded like an animal and he had a racoon problem in the past! Herb said
the cop looked him in the eye, smiled and left. I later made it plain to the
creep and his pals that any further problems and more than a few bruises
would result.....we never saw them again.
These days the useless cops would have had us both arrested.
He was experimenting with various imports as a way to get out of the ham
business which was ready to take a dive with US companies folding. The idea
was to have a botique for the wealthy town of Harvard and surrounding areas.
Herb just wanted no more stress, play on the air and build his collection of
very early radio gear.
Herb was more than fair to me and really surprised me with a very nice
wedding gift.
