[Hallicrafters] Panel Lettering

When it comes to perhaps the finest Artist for panel labeling and cabinet
restoration ever, it would be most difficult to equal, let alone exceed,
N4ALO, Lynn Brock! He was absolutely fantastic! It was indeed a sad day when
he decided to hang up his brushes and put his cans of paint out to pasture.

It has been claimed by some, not I, that Amateur Radio operators are
basically cheap at heart. Now all of us like to get a good deal, nothing
wrong there. However, sometimes we fail to realize the amount of work these
highly skilled Artists must put into each piece of work that they do. Does
their amount of effort equal the amount of payment they should receive for
said work? From my own observations over the past two decades, generally
not. It is more an act of love then one of earning a living or supplementing
their primary job.

Let the old blind Wizard state right here, that all of us should support the
Hams who are refinishing cabinets, doing panel lettering, replicating
original decals, electrically restoring vintage rigs, selling NOS vacuum
tubes, component restoration kits etc. If we want them to be there when one
of us needs their skilled, and rare, services, then we need to pay them well
and not complain about their prices! Otherwise gentlemen, we may find we
have but two choices. Do it ourselves or go without!

Thanks to all who make restoration doable in any form!

That is actually not correct. I have been in contact with the new owner of
NØALO's business (not located in NC) several times, recently as of a few
months ago. He stated the following in his first message to me:

>Greg
>I bought out Lynn's stock
>I'm on my way to being there but not quite
>I've actually discovered a newer better method available to me locally
>I can take a look at it if you like
>That I do good work (if I take it on) is assumed by all my customers
>That I do not charge enough is what I am always told

True, there was a fellow in NC who attempted to get into this line of work
but he was slow, unreliable and his work was very poor quality. He did one
job for me and after waiting several months to get it back I had to strip
it back down and send it to someone else. Perhaps this is the individual
you are referring to?

Regards, Greg

Actually, the business was bought several years ago by a fellow here
in NC. Last I'd heard, he was done with it for whatever reasons. My
last two queries went unanswered. Probably been a year or more. I'll
be seeing some of guys from his area at Frostfest, will ask them if
they've heard any more. A lot of good screens involved, along with
custom paints. If he's not going to proceed, hopefully someone else
will or has stepped in.

The thing to keep in mind with screening a textured surface is that it
will seldom appear as sharp as a smooth panel surface. 'Bleeding' to
some extent takes place, giving the lettering a slightly thicker or
fuzzy look on close inspection. Nothing unusual, though some folks
getting panels re-screened in recent years expected a level of
perfection that never existed on the original equipment.
