Interesting subject....
Several years ago, I was in a large Ham store in the Akihabra district of Tokyo. All the latest radios were on display, powered up and each had access to a large yagi on the roof of the building.
Interestingly, the JA Hams in the store were all checking out the radios with their hands in their pockets. If this display were in the USA, the knobs would be gone in a heartbeat! ha ha.......... Culture and all that.
Anyway, I noticed a big commotion at one end of the store and went to see what the fuss was all about. There in all it's glory was a very, very nice set of the Gold Dust Twins. I was interested because I had just recently bought a nice 75A-4.
The 75A-4 was powered up and receiving. I noticed everyone was keeping their distance and LOTS of "ooohs" and "ahhhs". There was a big sign on the A-4 which was backward from my direction, which I assumed said: "please don't touch". I was wrong. It read "OK to touch, but NOT for sale".... Yeah, culture....
I went back to the Icom, Kenwood, and Yaesu section and sure enough there were a few USA Hams "ooohing" and "ahhhing" over the latest radios.....
Also, don't believe your dreams about this area being overloaded with components, etc. There were some parts stores, but would you believe, I had a heck of a time locating some .01 uf caps!!!! One thing I remember was that accessories such as filters, etc, were about 1/3 of the price here in the States. I bought a couple for my 706g, but wish I had stocked up......

BTW, I bought a new (then) 756PRO and hand carried it back on business class. Still one of my favorite radios.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX-88
I find that I like the looks and history behind the old rigs but I'm becoming
ore practical. I'm beginning to thin down my collection. I thought I was going
o "wow" the club members with the gold dust twins all that was said was "they
ure are big and heavy" I really like the E-Ham reviews when a guy compares a
ld rig to his 2000+ rig and gives the old rig a low rating. Sort of like
omparing a 1954 corvette to a 2010 corvette. Saying all that I almost bought a
Bauer 707 transmitter, it was all I could do to walk away, I say collecting is a
disease. Howard KA6IOB
