I don't know if you can compare the old radio hobby to the old car hobby or
not as there is far less money flowing in the old radio hobby but there
is an interesting point to note about the old car hobby in our current
economy. My boss has a collection of over 250 high end collector cars most of
which came from various Barrett-Jackson auctions and he is currently very
active in both buying and selling. The guys who travel with him in connection
with the auctions tell me the economy has definitely hurt the "blue
collar" cars but not the "blue chip" cars. The high end stuff is still bringing
record prices.

Due to supply and demand and with just over 100 receivers currently
accounted for SX-88's prices have always fluctuated wildly according to
condition. The market always prices in scarcity, condition and quality and receivers
on the market in the past two years have either been rough needing to be
restored or were not well restored and potential buyers were just not
interested in what was being offered. Over the past few years I have sold four
completely restored SX-88 receivers for $10,000 each and one cosmetic
restoration only job for $7600 with my most recent $10,000 sale occurring during
the downturn in November of 2009. The four complete jobs involved hundreds
of hours of grunt work and no expense spared attention to detail.
Considering I usually spend around $5000 to get a good specimen to start with, a
$10,000 sale still has me seriously behind after adding in parts,
subcontracted work and many hours of time involved. I discovered I enjoy working on
them more than owning them and do it purely for the experience and sense of
accomplishment and at least I can recoup some of my cost afterwards because
there is usually a market for a good SX-88. In each case the check always
goes to my wife because wives simply like that part better and I found it
reduces complaints and helps foster support for the hobby from Chairman of the
Board. I have another SX-88 on the bench now which will be offered for
sale when finished. If it sells, fine; if it does not I will own a restored
SX-88.

Regards, Greg

Regarding prices, one character on ebay spent 2 grands on an SX-28
recently !! The radio had been 'rebulit' to the point that there wasn't
many
original parts left in the radio even the serial number tag on the rear
had been
replaced by a 'custom serial no. plate' !
