Charlie,
I am a good friend of "collinsham" and feel lucky to have one of his
early 28 restorations. The 28 Howard has is from the same gentleman,
who has, interestingly enough, sworn off future work on 28s after two years of it.
He says his time came out to about $5 an hour with 100 hours into the 28 that just sold.
White dials, he and some old timers have told me, were produced in the war years.
They would insist that its incorrect to say the amber ones are the only correct dials!
Howard's 28 by the way, is not a "ground up" rebuild as the one that sold on ebay, so it
wouldn't command such a high price.
A WW2 fighter pilot veteran friend in Ft Lauderdale specifically wanted his 28 to have
white dials, just as the 28s he saw in the war, he told me.
