I dont believe there is any magnet difference in the PM-23. Some have a removable cover and others dont.

Thank you Bill and Carl and Bill and Lloyd for very enlightening replies. I also gather that many R-42 units have had the speaker replaced, and that the PM-23 is best in the scarcer large-magnet version.

  Thanks,

  Clemens

The R-42 is the correct one and the R-45 is the rack mount if you intend to go that way.
The R-44 is the cheap one for the SX-43 and uses a 6x9" automobile speaker.....think Hammarlund sound.

While the PM-23 is an earlier speaker it is 12" and can really handle the PP 6V6's very well. I have 2 R-42's and about 8 PM-23's here in use on all brands because they sound good.

All but the R-45 are fairly common on Ebay and the PM-23 shows much more often there and at hamfests.

I am sure this is the very best place to ask the following question: What
are the chances of finding the speakers meant to be used with the
Hallicrafters SX-42? I.e. the R-42, the R-44 or R-45? And is it worth
making the effort? At the moment I am using one of the excellent circular
Hammond transformers to convert from the 500 ohms to a 4-8 ohms LS and
that sounds great. But of course it doesn't exactly look authentic. Even so
the "Darth Vader" speaker seems somewhat removed from Raymond Loewy's
amazing design. The rx is from my year of birth and as my son said "Excuse
me Dad, but it does not look like that". :-)

Any comments on availability and 'suitability' of the three speakers?

PS. Where should the serial nr. be on the SX-42?
