     I agree with you.  But I can also get a pretty good feel for 
somebody with some conversation.  If they have parts for sale, they 
usually have an interest in radio, and will converse.  Most crooks will 
show themselves just by not understanding some terms or other such 
things.  You can't converse intelligently about things you know nothing 
about, and that usually trips them up.  I've been burnt once in 25+ 
years of doing this, so my method seems to work pretty good for me.
