[Hallicrafters] Real radio men don't need no silly instructions

By 1950-51 nobody could hold a price line as inflation was in full swing. I
think the 129X peaked at $189 in 53.

I had a 129x during 56-63 or so when I made a mistake and got a 2B....what
a mistake! Total overload on a good antenna in a contest.

Then came a used 75A4 and lots of hours under the hood in the National lab.
I still have it......and a pair of 129X's.

However the NC-300 in top repair (there were several factory changes over
its life) is a much better CW radio while the 129X is still one of the best
BCB DXers ever made due to the custom tuning cap and great dial calibration.

I don't think Hammarlund was able to sustain the $129 for the HQ-129-X for
very long; but it may have lasted 12-18 months... that was before my time;
I'll have to study the ads.

Back in the beginning of the Age of Enlightenment, W4ATC, the club station
at NC State University, had a 129X and an NC-300. I operated the station
quite often and used both receivers; but always preferred the 129X
especially on CW. They also had an SW-3 stuffed into a junque pile in the
closet; it had been the first station receiver back in the early 30s
according to photographic evidence. The club had an auction to raise funds
for purchase of a set of Heath Twins (eccch)... the SW-3 brought a grand
total of five dollars. Wish I'd bought it!
