You need to get a new tape measure, Carl. The KW-1 is less than one
third the footprint of a Viking KW. Aside from the receiver which can
sit on top, on a shelf, or on a pizza box atop the electric range, it
doesn't need any accessories. :D
** Since your brains have turned to mush since moving south and becoming a
tamed homeboy Todd, Ill try and explain a few things to you.
The Johnson is a Steelcase desk with one side being a self contained amp.
The open top surface can easily contain the exciter and receiver of choice.
A shelf or two above can house the speaker, rotator control and other junk.
The KW-1 needs all the extras above except for the exciter....ie, a full
desk for the operator unless he cant afford one after buying that overpriced
relic.... The floor footprint is more than doubled.
The Johnson could also be operated as a SSB linear, I used mine with a
CE-200V for a few years.

Nor is it now, but we're talking contemporary comparisons.
** 1500W is legal for maybe 30 years. As I said you are stuck on one band.

Sorta like comparing an F1 car to your Impala. I don't think the Navy
rigs were built for or with amateurs in mind.
** Some are easier to tune and QSY than the KW-1, they usually didnt go
beyond 18mc.

Yep, Leo did like Heathkit and used whatever surplus parts were
available in quantity at the time. And made circuit changes like
Hallicrafters did, mid-stream.

Been a while since I was on 10, 15, or 20m. I seldom operate 75, but I
do enjoy 80m, or as W3GMS calls it "the 160m portion of the 75m meter
band". 40m is fun too, and the 10m aerial should be up within a week
or so. You need to get on sometime other than contests to hear and
work me. (o:
** Im on AM 160-2M with a lot on 17 to 10M during all the recent great
conditions. The rest of the time Im chasing CW DX with everything from late
20's tech to the TS-950SD.

You shouldn't need to be patient too long if you want another. I've
helped broker half dozen deals for folks around the country who were
selling theirs in the last 18 months or so. Prices are down on those
too, and I have a feeling that, like the SX-88, there will be more
coming up for sale soon.
** I'll keep that in mind, been thinking about putting a station upstairs
and it would have to be compact and look good. Ive got the HRO-60, just need
a Ranger.
Nice talking with you at Nearfest again, stay healthy so you can make the
next one.
