I dunno, Carl. Of the last 3 that sold, 2 were in the $25K+ range and
one was just under that. Not a lot of room or wasted space inside that
I'm aware of, though there certainly are a few compromises. Not a
perfect transmitter by today's standards, but tough to top in its era.

** Some folks have more money than brains when it comes to ego trips. There
are several contemporary rigs out there that work fine at a fraction of the
$ starting with a Ranger and Desk KW.

At the end of the day, if you had $25K to spend and wanted a bullet
proof 10-160m KW AM tube transmitter today, you could easily build one
better than the KW-1 and still pocket at least $20K. A lot of things
like quality iron are available much cheaper today than in 1953.

** These days a big tube as a linear is the way to go.
A YC-156 will run 375 or 2000W carrier (-;

Most or some? Outside of the SX-115, Mohawk, and a couple other
contemporaries (maybe the Drake R-4?), I can't think of any that don't
receive both sidebands. The older Super Pros are especially nice with
their variable IF. Even the 75A-4 does, limited only by its 6mc
mechanical filter. Stuff in a wider filter and it becomes a much more
pleasing receiver to listen to.

** The half wave detector only functions on one.

But then again - the SX-115 doesn't have 160 either. Too bad, as it's
a pretty decent receiver performance-wise, and looks great.
