My SX-42 bandspread window frame is gray, similar to the front panel but with a slight greenish tint. Raymond Moore's book "Communications Receivers" has a photo of one with a black frame, The photo in the 1949 amateur radio handbook Hallicrafters add has a gray frame as does Chuck Dachis' book. I suspect both colors were used by Hallicrafters in different runs of the SX-42.
