Tom,
This type of IF transformer usually has the capacitors built in to the base and they can develope problems, but usually can be repaired. Here is a link to how it's done.

I have done this on a couples of radios with good results.

My question is, where is the capacitor for the tuned circuit? In the base if the plastic or under the core slug? If its in the plastic my idea of using 28 gauge wire will not work unless I add a capacitor.
