Roger on Z-grams not coming in until 1970 - along with beards (never agreed 
with that part).  Ham stations/clubs were on EVERY shore station I was ever 
at - got my Novice at K6NCG (Treasure Island).. check out the website, W6DCM 
at the Fleet ASW Cen, SDIEGO, WA6NKC at US Nav. Tng. Cen, SDIEGO, WA6TBY at 
North Island NAS, SDIEGO, KG6AAY Nav Comm Sta Guam (FInegayen), and a ton of 
others.  Onboard my ship in '62, the Radiomen didn't want "those hams" 
anywhere around them - it was a rather pervasive thing for a long time, but 
after their first phone patch..we began to become persona grata - being an 
RM myself, paved the way.

I wonder how it is, these days, what with cellphones, Email, etc.
