Roger on Z-grams not coming in until 1970 - along with beards (never agreed
with that part). Ham stations/clubs were on EVERY shore station I was ever
at - got my Novice at K6NCG (Treasure Island).. check out the website, W6DCM
at the Fleet ASW Cen, SDIEGO, WA6NKC at US Nav. Tng. Cen, SDIEGO, WA6TBY at
North Island NAS, SDIEGO, KG6AAY Nav Comm Sta Guam (FInegayen), and a ton of
others. Onboard my ship in '62, the Radiomen didn't want "those hams"
anywhere around them - it was a rather pervasive thing for a long time, but
after their first phone patch..we began to become persona grata - being an
RM myself, paved the way.
I wonder how it is, these days, what with cellphones, Email, etc.
Tom, RMC USN
