I retired a couple or three years ago and may offer a definition:
Watch: what couch potatoes do in front of a boob box. To see with
the eyes and listen, both drivel.
Watch: small device worn on the wrist to tell what time of day it is.
Useful to people who work so they can yell at the kids when the bus is
coming down the road soon.,
Mechanical watch: Ingenious small device worn on the wrist. Has a
faint and comforting ticking sound. Often needs to be wound once a
day or so, thus enhancing the sense of connection with the thing the
owner has.
Pocket watch: Truly ingenious device of larger size worn in a watch
pocket, often on a leather fob or metal chain. Has a truly satisfying
sound. Fascinating mechanical parts are inside. Can be seen in dim
light and at a distance when eye glasses are not in position.
Sometimes family heirlooms or treasured long time possessions.
Railroad Pocket watch: More or less ultimate in the development of
the pocket watch. Extremely well made and very easy to read, even in
bad weather or in loud and busy situations with steam enveloping the
user. Sometimes has a full case of metal front and back for ultimate
physical protection and enhanced beauty.
