I agree Ron.  The beauty of the Wadley Loop is that it's a "drift
cancellation" mechanism that is very elegant in concept and reliable in
operation. Wadley loop receivers don't attempt to make the local oscillator
stable, but eliminate the effect of drift instead, providing most of the
benefits of a PLL without the phase noise and other 
drawbacks of poor quality PLL synthesizers.   Because they are by 
definition triple-conversion receivers there are some limitations, but most
have been successfully addressed in the popular commercial designs.

My favorite Wadley loop receivers include the unique Barlow Wadley
XCR-30 portable,  Racal  RA-17, and the amazing 64-tube WRR-2/FRR-59.
