Hmm... you positive those things are actually tubes? Or, maybe.... tube substitutes?
Y'know, it seems that I recall some solid-state replacements for tubes that were commercially available back in the late 60s or early 70s after FETs debuted. I can't remember what trade name they were sold under or which tubes they could be subbed for; seems like they were replacements for such tubes as 6AK5s rather than metal octals, but I can't be positive. I do remember trying a couple in a Motorola tube type 6 meter (or was it 2 meters? Who knows) FM mobile radio and it made quite a difference in the receiver sensitivity once the alignment was tweaked, going from something like 0.6 uV for full quieting down to around 0.25 uV or even less.... sorry I can't recall any more specifics.
