The original SX-111 did not have a product detector. The SX-111 Mark I added the product detector. Both version manuals are available on BAMA.

It is definitely possible to have selectable sidebands without a product detector. The earlier SX-101 receivers did not have a product detector but did have selectable sidebands.

I looked again. In the 1959 handbook the receiver is described as having 10 tubes plus voltage regulator and rectifier. In the 1962 edition its described as having 12 tubes plus regulator and rectifier. Both ads state it has a built-in crystal calibrator.

I compared the tube list. The later ad includes a 6AU6 calibrator tube which is not listed in the first ad. The earlier ad also lists a 6CB6 as the 1650khz IF, this is shown as a 6DC6 in the later ad. The later ad also lists a 6BY6 as a product detector, also not listed in the earlier ad. So, the tube count is right but did the earlier version actually have both calibrator and product detector? The older ad does mention the selectable side band feature which suggests it DID have the product detector. But, was the change in the 1650khz IF tube real or an error.

What may have happened was that the adverstising department was under the gun to get advertising placed and did not have correct information from where it was supposed to come from.
