I used the HT-44 amd SX-117 on Field Day in the mid 1960's. Seemed to be a
good rig and hooked to my old Gonset Tri-Bander at 35 feet we worked about
750 stations on 20 SSB. It took some time
to get used to tuning backward . I still don't know why Hallicrafters
replaced the HT-44 and SX-117
with SX-146 and HT-46. The 146 was not nearly the RX of the SX-117.
P&H made a VFOmatic that worked with several receivers and transmitters.
The most famous were two models that worked with the 75A4 and KWS-1. One
made the pair transceive on 80 and 20. Another model made them transceive
on 80 to 10 with the A4 controlling the TX frequency. They made another
model that worked with the HT-32.
I remember one ham who had the HT-32 working with both the SX-115 and
another receiver.
CQ Magazine featured an article on building your own in a 1964 or 1965
issue. I recall someone was going to ask Dick Ross at CQ for permission to
reprint the article in Electric Radio but I quit ER when the new editor
slanted the magazine toward military gear and big broadcast transmitters on
160 and 75 AM. I don't see such an article in the ER index on line.
