Agree ,John ! Those S-38's, S-40's etc are dime a dozen. Not a day goes by when you don't see an S-38 or S-40 etc listed on Ebay .
If you screw up,you won't feel miserable for the REST of your life !!
On other hand ,replacing an SX-28 power transformer is something you don't look forward to ! LOL
Nick

Another suggestion:
No matter how much you read, and *what* you read, there's no substitute for
oing (and it's also a lot more fun). It might be a good idea to start
arning restoration stripes by first working on a S-38 Halli, HR-10 Heath
r other more entry-level equipment. Maybe there's other guys who read a
ot and then were patient careful and skilled enough not to subsequently
reak stuff, but that's certainly not me. No matter how much you prepare,
ou'll learn far more by doing , and sadly but inevitably, screwing up.
It's far less angst-producing to pork a S-38 or low end Heath than a SX-28
Collins rig, or other mid to upper end piece of old gear.
Don't let the fear of making a mistake steer you away from working on old
ear. I doubt there's too many of us who haven't learned lessons though our
wn person versions of the "oh S*** ! " moment. Those moments are just not
uite so painful on a low priced piece of widely available gear.
Best
