Another suggestion:

No matter how much you read, and *what* you read, there's no substitute for 
doing (and it's also a lot more fun).  It might be a good idea to start 
earning restoration stripes by first working on a S-38 Halli, HR-10 Heath 
or other more entry-level equipment.  Maybe there's other guys who read a 
lot and then were patient careful and skilled enough not to subsequently 
break stuff, but that's certainly not me.  No matter how much you prepare, 
you'll learn far more by doing , and sadly but inevitably, screwing up.

It's far less angst-producing to pork a S-38 or low end Heath than a SX-28 
,  Collins rig, or other mid to upper end piece of old gear.

Don't let the fear of making a mistake steer you away from working on old 
gear. I doubt there's too many of us who haven't learned lessons though our 
own person versions of the  "oh S*** ! " moment. Those moments are just not 
quite so painful on a low priced piece of widely available gear.
