[Hallicrafters] s-76

Mike and all,

Bob Roehrig was kind enough to share his mods with me and others on the
Glowbug email reflector that asked for them. I think he would not mind if I
passed them on to others.

Just to set expectations before you ask for his paper, his major mod focuses
on the detector circuit such that after implementation of the mod, the
AGC/detector behaves much like the SX-100 circuitry (yes, it allows the
S-meter to operate on CW/SSB - :-) ). He also adds some bias correcting
resistors to a couple of tubes, BFO circuit improvement, adds a three wire
power cord, fuse, in-rush protection, and other circuit improvements. His
paper consists of two pages of circuit change descriptions and two pages of
hand drawn schematics. He requests feedback after making the changes.

Please reply off-list if you would like me to send Bob's mods to you.

I was inspired to get my S-76 after seeing Julian's USM-76 "announcement"
and finished product (I am still laughing - you had to be there). As luck
would have it, my 76 was too good looking to mess with. I did dress it up
with S-36 knobs (look like SX-28 knobs) and the set looks like it was made
for them.

Chris

I have three original S-76 manuals, each separately marked for Runs 1, 2 or
3. Run 1 has the bandspread dial marked only for 80-40-20-10, no 15; but I
haven't studied the books enough to note any other significant differences.
So, I can't differentiate; but if someone wants a copy of any of 'em let me
know.

There was a good article on the S-78 in QST in I think November 1954 (could
be wrong about the date). Check the ARRL QST archive on line at
www.arrl.org and search for it.

The S-76 is a nice, but not GREAT radio... humongois S-meter (with lights,
no less!) and a hot front end that'll hear a gnat fart in Outer Mongolia;
decent selectivity, and as stable as most any Halli ever gets; but no AVC on
CW and SSB (so the big sexy S-meter's useless there), and the BFO is a
little wimpy. The biggest flaw in my opinion is no flywheels in the tuning
so it's real twangy-feeling like an SX-99 (ugh). But if you put a BIG knob
on the bandspread, like a huge Collins skirted style, weighted and balanced,
it makes a world of difference! ("Waaaahhhh! It's not PURE!" Who the heck
cares! It makes the radio work MUCH better.)

If someone has a scan of the Bob Roehrig mods, I'd love to see it. Thanks
in advance. I have e-mailed him several times and have had every message
bounce back.
