OK, here's a Real unexpected find... my S.O. has broadband and Netflix
and you can watch movies for Free! Kewlness! So, being a sci-fi fan I
took a look (they have LOTS of goodies, even some early Russian flicks)
and found what probably was a political piece, given it was made in 1952
during the Red scare. (I think).
The movie's called Red Planet Mars. This hotshot (very early) radio
astronomer's trying for a REALLY hard contact... with Mars, of course...
using a purloined crystal (L.O.?) design that's hydrogen cooled.
Nothing. For months and months.. and then KA-POW! an answer!
But it just mimics his transmissions, until his son comes up with
an idea that... well, go watch and you'll see. Very inneresting
twist 'o plot, mebbe. Specifically, at 1:02:03 (?!) eggzackley
there's a Great shot of the Russian radio room's equipment which,
of Course, includes a couple of S-40's and SX-42's, stacked like
a collector does, one on top of the other... but clearly seen at
that point in the film.
So... another useless factoid to add to your collection. Enjoy!
