Love the check-ride story - on my Private C/R, I was told to dial in several
VOR's and verify them - knowing the morse code, I did NOT need to look at
the chart (as I found out, he wanted me to do). After performing everything
well, and landing, he said "I'm going to fail you for not identifying your
VOR's" - I said "Tell ya what, let's go up again, and YOU dial 'em in
without me looking at the frequency, and I'll tell you who they are!" I was
surprised when he took me up on it - sure 'nuff - he dialed in about 4 of
'em (North of Denver), and I ID'd them all -

He looks at me, and says "How'd ya do that?" I said "Simple, I'm a former
US Navy Radioman, an Extra Class ham radio operator, and have been using
Morse Code for 20 years plus" - He laughed out loud, and said "Ya got me -
you're passed".
