You're exactly right.  I dunno where I got fixated on that being a glass enclosed crystal.  And the only instance I've seen of a 1000 KHz metal tube crystal is indeed the LM/BC-221.  Those crystals show up fairly often at hamfests.  And I have seen a glass 1000 KHz crystal, but it was in some sort of test gear other than a BC=221/LM. 

The only other metal tube-like crystals I've encountered are in ARC-5/SCR-274N Command Set transmitters (calibration crystals, various freqs).  Supposedly, in early models of the ART-13/ATC transmitters, there was a metal-tube crystal in the calibrator module, but it was 200 KHz.  I've only seen photos of these.  The later ART-13 models had a plastic 200 KHz crystal in an FT-241 holder.
