[Hallicrafters] restringing dial of SX71

My wife, K5MOL, and I are about to attempt to restring the dials on the SX71. She has nimble fingers and can handle the tedious work. We have the service manual with the restringing diagrams but don't know whether the main tuning cap and the bandspread cap should be fully meshed or fully open when the restringing is begun.  Has anyone performed this task and can anyone clear up for us whether the tuning caps should be fully meshed or fully open when we begin?
