Brian, I've seen these skirts refurbished by repainting with a light coat
then wiping gently over the numbers with a soft cloth damped with paint
thinner. The numbers are raised ever so slightly. However, if the 'shine'
has worn off the numbers, you'll be better off just replacing them. The good
news is that many of the knobs are shared across other receivers like the
S-27, S-36 and others. As well, there are more than a few parts donors out
there. You should be able to come up with a good set of knobs either
completely, or by replacing only the ones that are bad.

I'm still searching for a clean set of dials for mine, having made the
mistake of picking it up to move when the front panel was off and holding
the receiver a bit too close. Hard to find a set that hasn't been darkened
or lost the red band lettering.
