I'm not trying to be a name dropper, but while working for Microlog Corp in
the late 70's, I had the honor to meet face to face with K7UGA. All of his
great statesman abilities completely disappeared when we started talking
about how to set up his Microlog RTTY equipment. He was just another Ham
learning about his new toys; a very personable guy who never let you forget
that YOU were important too in this world. With all the high roller
spending and perks we're hearing about from our prima donna types in
Washington now, it was very curious to note that Barry did NOT come out to
our Gaithersburg MD Office in a chauffer driven limo, but far from new AMC
Javelin which blew a radiator hose in our parking lot. His "driver"
apparently just a young page, walked over to the local auto parts store,
bought a new hose, and fixed it on the spot.
On of the main purposes of his station in AZ was running phone patch and
message traffic for the guys in Viet Nam. Several volunteers kept the
station on the air when he was in DC.
