I had an HT-40 in the early '70s. The two NE-2H bulbs in series
monitored the AM modulation, and were used to indicate distortion,
though I don't recall whether distortion was indicated by them flashing
on or blinking off.

"They are the arguments that kings have made for enslaving the people in
all ages of the world. You will find that all the arguments in favor of
king-craft were of this class; they always bestrode the necks of the
people, not that they wanted to do it, but because the people were
better off for being ridden."
Abraham Lincoln, July 10, 1858
