The first commercial amateur radio unit using transistors was the Regency
ATC-1 converter.
W8ZR has a great picture and story on his web site.
The QST review was sometime in 1956. QST then published a more complete
receiver in (as iI recall) in the May 1956 issue.
The Regency worked well hooked to a decent broadcast RX such as the Regency
base unit, the Morrow CM-1 or FTR (also used with the Morrow 5BR converter.
Not so well to a stock auto broadcast receiver. It worked as well as the
5BR tube converter. Morrow paired the XTR with the 5BR to make the MBR5
receiver.
