It was basically the FET that was developed in the late 1910s and into the 1920s.  They were known as "amplifying crystals".  Although they could be built the technology to build them on a commercial scale was not in place.

The junction transistor was the device that Shockley (et. al.) patented in 1947 which lead to the widespread use of the transistor.
