$1625 may be a record price for an SX-62A but it looks like a lot of time
and effort went into it to get it there. There are some others that will
produce better results in the market if that's your deal and you're going to go
that far with one. I know who the seller is and he is a pretty good guy. He
likes to restore Hallicrafters in that fashion and he lists them on a regular
basis as he gets them done. Maybe he does it to supplement his income, or maybe
he just enjoys restoring them and sprucing up the appearance, who knows...
but there are buyers are out there for this type of work as this particular
auction pointed out. Those buyers are willing to pay for extensive restoration
but they also want good cosmetics which presents a bit of a dilemma sometimes.

Hallicrafters chassis were originally cadmium plated and the type of cadmium
employed is called clear cad in the industry. As everyone knows it would
have originally had a low luster dull silver appearance. Most of them are rusty
or corroded now and it will not be enough to just do a general cleaning. When
it comes to restoring the appearance of the chassis your options are limited
and the most practical choice is often polishing. Of course you could always
completely disassemble the chassis to have it re-plated but this is entirely
impractical unless you just did it for yourself as a labor of love. The cad
plating is pretty thin and as was mentioned earlier if you don't apply a
retardant such as Cimguard to the surface it will quickly darken again. A
solution of Sodium Bisulfate is also effective in removing the oxidation and
restoring the original appearance which is what I use if I want to restore the
appearance on something I am not re-plating.

Here's an indication how Ebay prices can get out of control, all takes is a
guy with a lot of polishing experience and a sucker with a LOT of cash !!
Interestingly there was another guy trying to sell an SX16 for $650 on ebay
"polished " by the same character ,and after few a years the finish after
being exposed to the atmosphere returned to it's original ! I don't know if he
sold the '16 but I bet he paid a fortune for that radio.I guess all that
GLITTERS is GOLD !! Sorry those hallicrafters chassis never looked like "mirrors"
even when they were brand new !!

(I bet I'm going to receive some flak from people who bought those
"over-polished" SX-100's on Ebay )
