[Hallicrafters] SX-42

Condition, condition, condition.

"Works" means little since the seller usually enhances that a bit to a lot.
It is an absolute bear to recap (44 if I remember just in paper caps), and
change resistors. Leaky caps can take out a bandswitch wafer and then it
becomes a parts set or a labor of love.

A no guarantee original in average condition can be had for $100-150. A real
nice R-42 speaker brings at least that much. A near mint, no rust original
commands $150-250 and a lovingly restored one about $350-450. The economy
has depressed all except the real desirable models where even a slug ready
for the dumpster gets insane prices. Like $480 for a rusty SX-9 second run.

Mine is an almost mint original that I got off Ebay for $105 since it was
pickup only in Milwaukee. One of my sons lives close, picked it up and drove
it out during a regular visit.
I sold my other SX-42, recapped, etc but far from top cosmetics on Ebay for
$325 just before the election.. Paid $75 off Craigslist but if I charged
myself my regular rate I lost money! Probably get $200-250 today.

Its a better radio to look at than operate IMO but it matches the postwar
HT-9 it is used with on AM. A SX-28 and a prewar HT-9 sits below them and
gets used a lot more.

Subject: [Hallicrafters] SX-42

Hi, folks. Ive been contacted by ham friend (honest!) who asked me if I
would check around the web for a typical price for an SX-42.

I haven't seen it, undoubtedly never will. His description is pretty
generic: it works and is in good shape. He also made note that it had
the the original reproducer speaker.

If anybody has a few seconds and an idea, could you give me your
thoughts so I can pass them on?

TIA,

Tom NØJMY
