And for the really vintage solution, you can use a BC-221 (or one of the 
similar frequency meters) tuned to the frequency of the incoming signal 
as your BFO.  Of course you could do the same with a modern signal 
generator.  With this solution, as long as the vintage receiver doesn't 
drift so far that the signal drops out of the passband its basic 
stability doesn't matter since the "beat note" is a function of the 
transmitted signal and frequency meter or signal generator stability.
